Bail reform: Attorney general slams Pierre Poilievre for hinting he would use notwithstanding clause
Description
April 30, 2024
Attorney General Arif Virani on Tuesday slammed Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre who he said "demonstrated very clearly to the Canadian public what his true intentions are with respect to the notwithstanding clause and how easily he would use it." Virani added "I think if you want a clear cut case how this would impact Canadians lives, look no further than Mr. Zameer in Toronto — a man who was accused of killing a police officer and when he was granted bail, people in elected office, including the premier and two mayors in the greater Toronto area, all declared that it was a tragedy and an injustice. Bail is constitutionally protected." Poilievre has said he would use "whatever tools the constitution allows" to pass criminal justice laws if elected to form government.
