Inflation’s big shift? Consumer prices in Canada tumble in January

Canada’s inflation rate fell to 2.9 per cent in January, according to Statistics Canada on Tuesday — back inside the central bank’s target range. Many economists paint this as good news for Canadian businesses and household budgets alike. As Anne Gaviola explains, consumers are getting a break on what they pay for gas, food and even airfare — but mortgage costs and rents remain stubbornly high, which complicates things for the Bank of Canada.
