The union representing WestJet pilots says contract negotiations with the airline have been unproductive and federal arbitration may be needed to avert a strike.

After months of failed negotiations, the union representing WestJet pilots announced Wednesday was the start of a 21-day cooling-off period after which pilots can strike.
