A U.S. Senate committee approved the nomination of Donald Trump's choice for secretary of state on Monday after Rand Paul threw his support behind the CIA director in the face of party pressure.

Just a handful of senators could determine Pompeo's confirmation. Republicans have a narrow 51-49 majority, but Pompeo faces opposition from Democrats and at least one Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.
