Shocking video released by an animal rights group Friday appears to show the manager and the son of the owner of Papanack Zoo, near Ottawa, admitting to beating a lion cub for training purposes.

The consternation surrounding an Ontario zoo's decision to kill a lion that escaped from its enclosure on the weekend is raising questions on two fronts - regulations surrounding wild animals, and the purpose of keeping such creatures captive in the first place.
