The federal government says it will ban the sale of shower gels, toothpaste and facial scrubs containing plastic microbeads, effective July 1, 2018.

Microbeads, which are tiny plastic pellets, are used as cheap abrasives and are too small to be filtered out of waterways, where they end up flowing to the ocean and harming wildlife.
