Canada has joined its allies in expressing 'grave concern' over the results of the Hong Kong election, which saw pro-Beijing candidates dominate.

Hong Kong's pro-Beijing chief executive said the government respected the results and wished "the peaceful, safe and orderly situation to continue."

Some winning candidates said the result was akin to a vote of support for the protest movement, and could raise the pressure on Hong Kong's pro-Beijing chief executive, Carrie Lam, amid the city's worst political crisis in decades.
