A local mom and daughter have won $25,000 for their idea on how to deter catalytic converter thefts — a crime police estimated cost Edmontonians nearly $20 million last year.

Police said scammers will approach people in parking lots or busy roadways and will try to sell them fake gold while attempting to steal valuables from the victim.
