The chief of the remote northern Ontario community of Attawapiskat says health-care workers are “overwhelmed” after 11 people in the community of roughly 2,000 attempted to take their own lives on Saturday.

The remote northern Ontario first nation of Attawapiskat has declared a state of emergency after a rash of suicide attempts was reported over the weekend. It's not the first time the James Bay community of about 2,000 has made such a declaration.

A 10-year-old child was among the 11 people who tried to kill themselves Saturday.
