In a move that should have a lot of Manitoba cats purring, declawing has been officially banned in the province.

The Winnipeg Humane Society is supporting Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association's proposal to ban cat declawing.

More than two dozen veterinary hospitals in Alberta are among nearly 100 clinics across Canada that will no longer perform elective declawing in cats.

Nova Scotia is the only other province in Canada to ban cat declawing.

It's a procedure that's been done in Canada for years, but now some animal lovers in Saskatchewan are pushing for the banning of cat declawing following a recent move by Nova Scotia.

The ban will come into effect on March 15, 2018, following a three-month education period.

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has formally come out against declawing cats, with some hoping this will push Nova Scotia to an outright ban.
