A "surge" in foreign steel products coming into Canada has federal officials considering "exceptional" safeguard measures.

As U.S. President Donald Trump exempts Canada from steep new tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum for another month, the Canadian government has quietly approved new promised measures aimed at cracking down on the dumping of such materials by countries like China. 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has spoken directly with U.S. President Donald Trump to make clear Canada views the imposition of steep new tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum as "absolutely unacceptable" and that the decision "makes no sense."
