Johnson told lawmakers restrictions were being eased because government scientists believed it was likely the surge of infections driven by Omicron "has now peaked nationally."

"The prime minister said it was too early to draw conclusions on the characteristics of Omicron but that early indications were that it was more transmissible," a spokesman said.
