MEADOW LAKE, Sask. – A coroner’s inquest has heard that a Saskatchewan RCMP officer had blood on him and two bumps on his forehead after the fatal shooting of a man he was trying to arrest.
Const. Ryan Boogaard was testifying Monday at a hearing into the death of Harry Haineault on the Clearwater River Dene Nation.
The inquest heard that Boogard and another constable, Jamie Grant, were serving an arrest warrant on Haineault in September 2008 when the man bolted from a house.
A coroner’s jury in Meadow Lake, Sask., was told Grant caught the 38-year-old man, who died during a struggle with the Mountie in some woods near the home.
Boogaard testified that a dishevelled and sweating Grant told him he had to shoot Haineault, who was lying face down on the ground with one wrist handcuffed.
More than a dozen witnesses are expected to testify before the jury, which can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.
