Hurricane Lee: Closures and cancellations in N.S. and N.B. for storm

Hurricane Lee is heading toward parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as a category one hurricane, Climate Change Canada meteorologist Bob Robichaud said on Thursday, adding it has accelerated over the "last day or so." He added officials will begin responding to the storm on Friday – Sep 14, 2023

Maritime residents are feeling the impact of post-tropical cyclone Lee on Saturday as heavy rains and powerful wind gusts have caused power outages for thousands. As a result, people in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are dealing with a long list of service closures.

Here is an ongoing list of cancellations:

NOVA SCOTIA

  • Both the Macdonald and MacKay bridges in Halifax are closed to high-sided vehicles, Halifax Regional Municipality has said that buses will be re-routed as required
  • Ferry operations have been suspended for the day
  • All branches of the Halifax Public Libraries are closed for the remainder of Saturday
  • Nova Scotia Health Authority has announced several closures including the emergency department of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg, Cobequid Community Health Centre’s mobile primary care clinic, and the St. Margaret’s Bay Blood Collection in Upper Tantallon
  • Saturday’s Halifax Wanderers match vs Atlètico Ottawa at the Wanderers Grounds has been postponed until Monday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
  • Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market will be closed Saturday.
  • Halifax Public Gardens will be closed Saturday and “likely Sunday as well”
  • Halifax Transit says the Alderney Ferry will cease running at 10:30. Bus shuttles will be provided for passengers from Alderney to Halifax Ferry Terminal.
  • Provincial parks close for camping at 1 p.m. Friday and day-use parks close at 7 p.m. Shubenacadie Wildlife Park will be closed Saturday.
  • Several waste depots throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality will be closed on Saturday including the Middle Musquodoboit Rural Refuse Depot, Sheet Harbour Rural Refuse Depot, and the Household Special Waste Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive in Halifax.
  • Bay Ferries has cancelled the Yarmouth to Bar Harbor sailings at 9:30 a.m. and Bar Harbor to Yarmouth sailings at 3:00 p.m. for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Marine Atlantic says North Sydney to Port aux Basques sailings on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. are rescheduled for Sunday at 12:15 p.m. weather permitting. The Port aux Basques to North Sydney sailing at 11:45 a.m. is now schedule to depart Sunday at 11:45 a.m. Meanwhile, the Port aux Basques to North Sydney on Saturday at 11:45 p.m. is cancelled.

NEW BRUNSWICK

  • The Grand Manan Ferry, the Peninsula Princess Ferry, the Deer Island, the White Head Ferry and the Belleisle Bay Ferry all suspended Saturday services
  • New Brunswick Parks is closing some provincial parks as of Friday evening, while others will close on Saturday. Sugarloaf Park, Republic Park and Mt. Carleton Provincial Park (excluding trails) will remain open with emergency plans in place.
  • All municipal recreational facilities and fields in Saint John are closed on Saturday
  • Fundy National Park is closing all camping areas until Monday at noon and full refunds will be issued Visitors are discouraged from visiting the park’s beaches and trails this weekend
  • Bay Ferries has cancelled the Saturday sailings of Fundy Rose. Departures on Sunday from Saint John at 8 a.m. and Digby at 11 a.m. are also affected.
  • The ongoing Harvest Music Festival in Fredericton has cancelled three free outdoor concerts scheduled for Saturday.
