Provincial and local politicians and transit officials took part Wednesday in the start of construction of the $400-million Train de l’Est, an 11-stop commuter rail line that will link downtown Montreal with North Shore Mascouche over 52 kilometres.

Ceremonies began at the future Ahuntsic station, at t l’Acadie Blvd. and Louvain St. W. Speakers included Quebec Transport Minister Sam Hamad, Culture Minister Christine St-Pierre, who represents l’Acadie riding, Education Minister Line Beauchamp, (Bourassa-Sauvé), LaSalle borough mayor Manon Barbe, in charge of transport for the city executive committee, and Joel Gauthier, president of the Agence Métropolitain de Transport.

They also visited station sites at Sauvé St. and Port Royal, and in Montreal North, St. Léonard, Anjou, Rivière des Prairies and Pointe aux Trembles.
