Cypress County reveals plan to extinguish toxic landfill fire

After days of battling a toxic landfill fire, officials in Cypress County say they’re ready to execute a new plan to fully extinguish the flames.

Hellfire Suppression Services has been contracted by the county. They plan to remove all materials from the pit using heavy machinery to expose and douse hot spots as well as waste being removed.

Officials say if left to burn off, the flames could last another five years. With this method they predict the fire will be out within ten to 25 days.

Nine homes have been evacuated since the fire began Monday with several communities under an air quality advisory.

Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.
