Victim, two suspects identified in deadly home invasion in Surrey

Homicide investigators have now identified the victim and two suspects in a deadly home invasion in Surrey earlier this month.

They have arrested two males in connection to the homicide of 44-year-old Corey Bennett.

Matthew Rene Bernard, 27, has been charged with manslaughter and robbery with a firearm. He appeared in Surrey court Friday morning and was remanded into custody until Nov. 25, where he will be appearing at 9:30 a.m. IHIT said Bernard has a criminal record dating back to 2000 with his last conviction happening in April 2012.

Donald James Chad, 30, has been charged with second-degree murder and robbery with a firearm, IHIT announced Saturday. There was also a separate charge for possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, as Chad was found to be in possession of a firearm when he was arrested on Nov. 22.

The victim of the homicide was known to police, and had what they are calling ‘significant’ ties to the drug trade.

He was found in a Surrey home November 9 and rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
