Watch: B.C. woman faces more than $650,000 in medical bills after serious accident in the U.S.

A B.C. woman who survived a life-altering car accident in the U.S. is facing financial ruin because she didn’t have travel insurance.

Carol Enns had been shopping in Washington state, and was almost home when an alleged drunk driver hit her head on.

She was actually dead when the ambulance arrived, but was resuscitated on the way to the hospital.

Her joints were crushed, dozens of bones broken. And when Enns regained consciousness, she was blind.

Enns spent 19 days in a Spokane ICU, racking up a hospital bill of more than 650 thousand dollars.

But even though she has insurance through ICBC, their accident benefit coverage is limited to $150,000.

Enns didn’t get extra coverage when she left her Rossland home to go shopping in Washington state.

Now, she has to rely on lawyers to help re-cover the expenses.

“For many, they would be surprised at just how inexpensive it actually is relative to the extreme costs of some of the expenditures you might have if an emergency actually does arise,” says Adrian Bois with Blue Cross.

Enns has been in rehab in Abbotsford for the past four months.

Her family has set up a website to raise money to make her house in Rossland wheelchair accessible. To help, go here.
