Communities in Lethbridge County are no longer on tornado watch, according to Environment Canada’s website as of Wednesday evening.
Earlier that day, Environment Canada had said a tornado was possibly produced in a severe afternoon thunderstorm in southern Alberta.
Around 2:30 p.m., Environment Canada meteorologists tracked a funnel cloud about 30 kilometres north of Lethbridge, moving northeast at 25 km/h.
As of 7:46 p.m., Environment Canada said the communities of Lanfine and Excel were in the path of the thunderstorm.
The storm was 10 kilometres northwest of Oyen as of 7:46 p.m.
Those living in the affected areas were encouraged to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from doors and windows, according to Environment Canada.
“Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately,” said the government agency.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”
A tornado watch was also issued for much of southern Alberta Wednesday afternoon. A “watch” is issued when conditions are favourable for a tornado to develop, and is a less-severe alert than a “warning.”
