BOWMANVILLE, Ont. – Outcry from animal rights activists hasn’t stopped an aging elephant from marching in a Santa Claus parade in Bowmanville, east of Toronto.

The 53-year-old pachyderm named Limba joined the festivities Saturday despite a grapefruit-sized mass on her left abdomen discovered by her keepers at the Bowmanville Zoo.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The lump found during a routine examination has yet to be diagnosed as cancerous or not, and zoo director Michael Hackenberger says Limba is in good spirits.

Activists had urged the zoo and parade committed not to bring Limba to the march, an event she has joined more than 20 times before and was dressed in a red Santa hat and cloak for.

They instead want her moved to a sanctuary like the one in California three Toronto Zoo elephants were recently relocated to.

Camels, horses, zebras, baboons and reindeer from the zoo also marched in the parade.
