Kettle campaign struggling to find volunteers

SASKATOON – One of Saskatoon’s largest fundraisers, the Salvation Army Kettle Campaign, kicked off Thursday and it’s already struggling to fill its volunteer requirement.

“There were 1,250 volunteer positions that need to be filled, we’re about 75 per cent full. We need a lot more volunteers for the month of December,” said Heather Hedstrom, with The Salvation Army.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Hedstrom said their loyal volunteers are getting older and simply can’t do it anymore.

She’s hoping more young people step forward.

“A lot of people think it’s going to be a massive time commitment. It’s two and a half to three hours, you can do one shift. One shift is what helps,” said Hedstrom.

Holiday event organizers hope it’s just a matter of inspiring the younger generation to step forward.
