Over a thousand people attend local fundraiser for Typhoon Haiyan victims

It was a sold-out crowd at the Grand Taj Banquet Hall in Surrey Thursday night.

Members of the city’s Filipino and Indo-Canadian communities joined forces to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan that has hit the Philippines over the weekend, affecting millions of people.

Twelve hundred people were expected to be in attendance for the “celebrity tribute” show, involving the lookalikes of Tina Turner and Neil Diamond.

The goal is to raise $50,000 for the Canadian Red Cross.

The latest numbers indicate 4,460 people have been killed by the typhoon. The United Nations says close to a million people have been displaced. Tens of thousands are living in the open or sheltering in the remains of their homes and badly damaged public buildings, exposed to rain and wind.

Meanwhile, B.C. government has committed to matching all donations made by citizens to the Canadian Red Cross for the Philippines typhoon relief, up to $300,000.

The federal government has already promised up to $5 million in aid money and has pledged to match donations.
