The Edmonton police tactical unit were seen at the Health Sciences/Jubilee LRT station on Friday morning.
At around 7 a.m., Edmonton Transit security reported an item they were worried could have been a gun on one of the LRT train cars to police.
“Due to the nature of the call, EPS’ tactical unit responded to the LRT car in question and took one male into custody,” an Edmonton police spokesperson said.
No gun was located, police said, and no one else was inside the LRT car at the time.
“The male was transported to hospital by EMS for assessment,” EPS said.
The 49-year-old man was in stable condition, Alberta Health Services said.
Police later told Global News that no charges are pending and that it appears a personal item was mistaken for a gun.
An Edmonton Transit Service spokesperson said the “alleged security-related incident” caused “delays and minor disruptions” on the Capital/Metro Line.
LRT riders were delayed between 10 and 15 minutes and advised of a “major incident.”
“We take the safety of our staff and riders very seriously,” said Ryan Birch, director of operations for the Edmonton Transit Service, in a statement to Global News.
“With the help of Edmonton Police Service, we were able to resolve the situation safely and efficiently, without incident.
“We are currently working to resume regular Capital/Metro Line LRT service,” he said at around 9:45 a.m. “We appreciate our riders’ patience during this time.”
