When Peter Schwagly of Bodycomp Imaging asked if I wanted to hop under the scanner back in February, I thought it would be kind of “fun”. Boy was I wrong. Those results prompted me to rethink what I was doing in my own Healthy Lifestyle Challenge. According to the scan, I was technically OBESE at 35.8% body fat. For my age, I should be under 35%. WOW. I vowed to shed some of that fat and get into the healthy range. (Read my first blog posting here.)
One of the editors at Global who smokes a LOT (a pack a day) even challenged me to a bet. He said if I got below 30% body fat, he would quit smoking. So now it wasn’t just my health at stake…it was his too.
I am happy to report 4 months later, I am down to 31% body fat and counting. I lost 9.3 pounds of fat and gained 1.6 pounds of lean muscle! And I didn’t do anything dramatically different. I kept up with my exercise routine and started watching what I eat more carefully. The biggest change for me was adding more protein. Every morning with my cereal or oatmeal, I shake up a couple of scoops of whey protein powder with my soy milk.
I think in another few weeks, I’ll below 30%. Which means for one editor at Global, those smoking days are over!!
