A 58-year-old woman is dead after a fire broke out at a multi-level home in Toronto’s downtown area, officials say.
Toronto Fire Services said they were called to Dundonald Street, near Church and Wellesley streets, at around 3:27 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a fire on the main floor level of the home.
Victoria Chueng, an investigator with Office of the Fire Marshal, told reporters that neighbours had reported they heard the smoke alarms going off.
“The fire alarm system was working at the time of the fire,” Chueng said.
Cheung said when firefighters arrived the fire had already been put out as neighbours were able to put it out with fire extinguishers.
She said crews then found a 58-year-old woman on the main floor of the home who was taken to hospital where she later died.
“I extend sincere condolences to the family, friends and all those impacted by this morning’s fatal fire on Dundonald,” Toronto fire chief Matthew Pegg said. “The fire has been extinguished and the investigation will commence alongside.”
The woman was the only person living on that floor, Cheung said. Although, Toronto fire officials said other people lived in different parts of the home.
Cheung said there is no suspicion of foul play for the fire.
The origin, cause and circumstances of the fire has not yet been released.
Some people had been evacuated from the home, fire officials said.
