SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon has proposed an increase in its snow clearing budget of $1.6 million for the 2014 season to include plowing of all residential, industrial and commercial streets.

Deep ruts on neighbourhood roads were a big concern for residents last year.

The city says it listened and the extra funding will allow for two city wide clearings which would occur if the level of packed snow reaches six inches.

“There’s been an outcry from citizens and council has recognized that as well as administration staff that we need more money put into the snow budget to address those driving conditions on residential streets,” said City of Saskatoon Director of Public Works Pat Hyde.

The city says it will continue its priority street system ensuring high traffic roadways are cleared within 72 hours.

“The first priorities are to ensure the movement of traffic on the freeway and major streets, access to emergency locations and to keep major transit routes cleared,” said Hyde.

“Our goal is to make it easy and safe for people to move around Saskatoon,” he added.

Next year’s budget is yet to be approved by council.
