INGONISH, N.S. – Parks Canada is stepping up wildlife patrols and attempting to trap coyotes at a Nova Scotia park after a teenage girl was bitten twice on the scalp while camping outside.
On Monday, the 16-year-old girl was bitten while sleeping at a campsite in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Family members of the unnamed girl were asleep in a tent when the coyote attacked around 4 a.m. The teenager screamed as she awoke, and then hit the animal.
"In this case, the person seemed to follow the advice that we give visitors . . . If there’s an attack, make noise and act big and fight back," said Derek Quann, a park resource conservation manager.
Quann said the park has set up to 10 live traps outside the campground to catch coyotes.
Last October, Ontario singer Taylor Mitchell, 19, died after being attacked by coyotes at the same park.
