Bomb threat along Highway 97 in Kelowna, B.C. now over

A long stretch of Highway 97 has been ordered shut after a resident noticed a suspicious package just before noon on Monday. The potentially explosive item - described by police as a potential "pipe-bomb" - was found near the Wendy's on Highway 97, triggering a highway closure in both directions at Cooper Road and Hardy Road. – Feb 27, 2023

Kelowna RCMP has confirmed the item near the Wendy’s on Highway 97 in Kelowna, B.C. was a bomb and has now been safely detonated.

Police told Global News that the bomb squad was called in from Vancouver and safely handled the bomb.

A portion of Highway 97 between Cooper Road and Spall Road was closed due to the discovery around 12 p.m. The section is now reopened to motorists.

Mounties say the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when it becomes available.

The bomb was first discovered when a resident spotted a suspicious item in the restaurant’s parking lot.
