A Hamilton, Ont. woman is facing murder and attempted murder charges after a Sunday night crash in Grimsby.
Niagara Regional Police accuse the 44-year-old of intentionally striking another vehicle, propelling it into a ditch near Ridge Road West and Mountain Road.
Homicide investigators say an 82-year-old female died at the scene while a 79-year-old man was transported to an out-of-town hospital with undisclosed injuries.
He was in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.
Officers arrested the accused driver, identified as Sonya Sekhan from Stoney Creek, at the scene.
Const. Phil Gavin told Global News the first degree murder charge reflects elements of premeditation within’ the investigation.
“The parties involved weren’t known to each other, so at this point evidence has been found … from our homicide unit … supported by detectives from our forensic services and collision reconstruction unit that support the charge of first degree murder,” Gavin explained.
Gavin went on to say a publication ban has been placed on the court proceedings, and the accused has been remanded in custody until March 8th.
