2 in hospital after double Wednesday morning shootings: Calgary police

Calgary police are investigating two shootings that took place within less than an hour of each other Wednesday morning.

At around 2:40 a.m., police started to receive calls about shots fired in the northeast neighbourhood of Temple. Police taped off a house in the area of Temple Drive N.E. and 43 Avenue N.E. where they said a victim was found with gunshot wounds.

Officers said the victim was outside of the residence with a group of people when a vehicle approached them and fired gunshots. Multiple rounds of different ammunition were located at the scene and lodged in vehicles and residences along Temple Drive N.E. and Templevale Gate N.E.

Police said shots were fired by two groups of people and arrested two people who were located inside the residence.

The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition, according to a Wednesday afternoon news release.

Officers then responded to reports of a red Jeep Commander on fire in the 0 to 100 block of Saddleland Court N.E. The fire was extinguished. Investigators believe the vehicle is related to the shooting in the Temple neighbourhood.

Investigators said the shooting was targeted with “organized crime motivations” and everyone involved was known to each other.

Police are trying to identify additional suspects who may be travelling in another red Jeep Commander, a white Chrysler 300 and a white pickup truck (either a Dodge Ram or GMC Sierra).

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or these vehicles, or who has dashcam footage from the following locations, is asked to call police:

  • Temple Drive N.E., near Templevale Gate, Templevale Road and 43 Avenue
  • Saddleland Drive N.E., from Saddlecrest Boulevard to 89 Avenue, and near Saddlemont Boulevard

Second shooting not believed to be related

At around 3:10 a.m., police were called to the southeast neighbourhood of Penbrooke Meadows for reports of a second shooting.

Police had a good portion of the 5300 block of 5 Avenue S.E. taped off as a result. Global News confirmed a man between the ages of 20 and 30 was shot.

The man was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition with a single gunshot wound. Police later said he was in serious but stable condition in a news release on Wednesday.

Officers then located a stolen dark grey Honda Civic a short distance away, which they said is believed to be connected to the shooting.

Officers also spoke to witnesses to identify potential suspects.

Police said the shootings were not connected, even though the one in Penbrooke Meadows is also believed to have been targeted.

Detours in Temple

As for the shooting in the northeast, police blocked off Temple Drive and there were changes to bus routes in the area.

City transit said on Twitter that routes 38 and 57 were affected and that detours were in place.
