Hoping to book an Alberta camping spot online? Good luck

With the long weekend ahead, many are looking forward to camping. But on Wednesday, there were fewer than 25 spots left on Alberta Park’s online campsite reservation system.

Don’t worry — there are still lots of sites available.

"There’s another 140 or so provincial campgrounds that offer first come, first served," said Anne Douglas, director of communication for Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. "People can still get a spot."

Douglas said the mixed system works for those who like to plan ahead and those who don’t. She noted there are a number of campgrounds in Kananaskis Country and the Red Deer River Provincial Recreation Area that are available without prior arrangements.

There are no liquor bans.

"It’s based on our experience that during the May long weekend, we have the most liquor-related responses," Douglas said.

Douglas also said campers need to respect the land and wildlife — and use outdoor common sense.

"Be bear smart and be aware of the steps to take so your food supply is protected. If you’re going out on the water, wear a life-jacket."

With temperatures rising, fire bans may be in place. Douglas suggested checking albertafirebans. ca before heading out.

Anastasia Drummond, wildlife information officer, said there aren’t many fire bans in southern Alberta, but that could change.
