Calgary news anchor Barb Higgins resigns

Longtime CTV Calgary anchor Barb Higgins signed off for the final time Thursday, announcing her resignation from the newscast on air.

"I’ve given this a lot of thought," Higgins said as she made the announcement in a tearful farewell on the CTV News @ 6.

"It’s been a fabulous 21 years."

Higgins’ first newscast with the Calgary station was in 1989. Since then, she and anchor Darrel Janz have delivered roughly 5,000 newscasts together, covering stories including the 2002 Erlton condo fire, numerous elections and lighthearted pieces such as the Red Mile and Grey Cup parties, Higgins said.

"One of the things I loved most about news was talking to people about their lives and getting to the heart of their story," she said.

Asked on air by Janz what she plans to do next, Higgins said she’s made a decision about her future but declined to reveal it.

"I really think today’s not the day to talk about it," Higgins said.
