Questions about $1 million contract for school gym

The Canadian Taxpayers Association is questioning the contract awarded to Calgary’s Sprung Structures for a $1.1 million gym for Elbow Park students displaced by the June flood.

The temporary bubble-roofed gym will be in addition to the current gym at Earl Grey Elementary, which is preparing to accommodate around 200 students from Elbow Park.

The contract awarded to Sprung Structures did not go up for tender. The company’s vice president,Tim Sprung, is also president of the Elbow Park Residents Association in Premier Alison Redford’s Calgary riding.

The Canadian Taxpayers Association says the Redford government is sending the wrong message.

“It stinks pretty badly,” says the CTF’s Derek Fildebrandt. “It would be fishy enough if it went to them after a tendered process,s but it stinks really, really badly, when it goes without any competitive bid.”

The province denies any political motive in awarding the contract to Sprung and says it is acting in the best interests of students.
