It has been three months since Dustin LaFortune was reportedly assaulted and left for dead at a Regina hospital, but now the 26-year-old is getting back on his feet.
A string of medical updates posted on the family’s website documenting LaFortune’s recovery shows photos of him standing up and trying to smile, even though he is missing most of his bottom lip.
Wearing a white T-shirt and ball cap, the photos show LaFortune enjoying a Canada Day outing to Wascana Centre and the Saskatchewan Science Centre with a friend and his brother, who is pushing him in a wheelchair.

On July 7, the site reported LaFortune was trying to transfer to a residential acquired brain injury (ABI) program in Winnipeg to continue his therapy.
It is unclear if he is still in Regina or has moved back to his home city.
The latest medical report said LaFortune is now able to walk a short distance without a walker, but remains at risk of falling as a result of his brain injury. A series of reconstructive surgeries will be necessary to rebuild LaFortune’s mouth, ears and face.
Despite some problems with memory loss, police said LaFortune has been co-operative as the investigation continues into the case, which captured the attention of the country.
Regina police spokesperson Elizabeth Popowich said nobody has been charged in connection with the assault.
LaFortune was first reported missing in Calgary on April 12. Four days after that report, Regina police were called to the General Hospital after a man who appeared to be the victim of an assault was dropped off.
The man, who was identified as LaFortune, reportedly weighed 90 pounds and had injuries all over his body. Portions of his lip had been cut off, along with part of his tongue. He also had broken ribs and a smashed face.
