Manitoba’s police watchdog is looking for people who witnessed an officer-involved shooting on Saturday evening.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says Winnipeg police became involved in an incident at 7:30 p.m., when they went to a man’s house to arrest him.
Police have said the man had outstanding arrest warrants and upon attending to home where he was believed to be present, officers saw him driving away.
Police say officers saw and stopped the man’s vehicle near the intersection of Portage Avenue and Bourkevale Drive.
“At which time there was an altercation that occurred between police and the male suspect that resulted in one of the officers discharging his service firearm, striking the male,” IIU’s civilian direct, Zane Tessler, told 680 CJOB’s The News, Monday.
The man was rushed to Health Sciences Centre, where he later died, Tessler said.
Tessler said this is the ninth police-involved shooting the IIU has investigated in 2022.
He said roughly 60 per cent of the nearly 40 officer-involved shootings investigated by the IIU in the last four years have happened in Winnipeg.
