SASKATOON – A community north of Saskatoon will benefit from a newly upgraded access road.

The Saskatchewan government invested $20.3 million to refurbish a stretch of road from 2.2 km south of Highway 16 to Dalmeny, Sask.

“Commuter traffic in the area will have a wider, stronger and smoother road,” said Nancy Heppner, central services minister and Martensville MLA.

The thin membrane surface (TMS) on a 13.5 km stretch has been paved and widened along with a realigned intersection for safer access to Highway 16.

The highway ministry says TMS roads are susceptible to break up with the spring thaw and under high volume truck traffic.

“The government has fulfilled a promise, and we will see an increase in both commercial and residential sales. There isn’t a sad soul in the community today,” said Dalmeny Mayor Allan Earle.

Construction began in June, 2012 and a second layer of pavement will be added to some sections in the spring.

Crews are still on site to complete ditch work before the ground freezes so motorists are reminded to slow to 60 km/h in construction zones.
