Langley RCMP are warning residents of identity fraud after discovering a large amount of stolen mail Thursday.
When Mounties responded to a motor vehicle collision in the early morning hours they weren’t expecting to discover the stolen mail.
Mounties said a red 1991 Ford Lariat truck collided with a power pole in the 3200-block of 200 Street. The driver of the truck fled the scene.
When officers arrived, they found a large quantity of stolen mail from various Surrey and Langley communities around the truck.
Mounties are warning residents to be vigilant in collecting their mail and not to leave it unattended overnight.
During holidays, residents are urged to have someone collect their mail daily, or have Canada Post hold it for a fee.
People are also encouraged to monitor bank or credit card accounts and contact their financial institutions if accounts have been compromised.
Anyone who has been a victim of identity fraud should visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website or call 1-888-495-8501.
Officers are asking anyone who witnesses suspicious people, vehicles or activity to report it immediately.
