Premier makes his moves

Premier Brad Wall shuffled his cabinet Tuesday, promoting a Saskatchewan Party founder to the highest-profile ministry in the province while also adding two new faces and bringing an old one back.

Ken Krawetz, the deputy premier, takes over as Finance minister from Rod Gantefoer, who announced earlier this month that he will not seek re-election next year.

Donna Harpauer moves from Social Services into Krawetz’s old portfolio in Education while June Draude moves from the Crown Investments Corporation file to Social Services.

Draude also holds on to the responsibility over the Public Service Commission and takes on the responsibility for the Status of Women.

Tim McMillan and Laura Ross both enter cabinet for the first time. McMillan will be the Minister responsible for CIC, SGI, Information Services Corporation and the Information Technology Office while Ross becomes Minister for Government Services.

Ross takes that portfolio from Christine Tell, one of three MLAs (including Gantefoer) gone from the last cabinet. The other is former Environment Minister Nancy Heppner, who faced much criticism in the past year for failing to consult several groups over changes to the Wildlife Habitat Protection Act.

Darryl Hickie, who was not included in the last cabinet after having come under fire for a series of escaped prisoners as Minister for Corrections, Public Safety and Policing in 2008, returns to cabinet as Minister of Municipal Affairs.

Ken Cheveldayoff moves from the Enterprise, Trade and SaskEnergy portfolios to become Minister of First Nations and Metis Relations with responsibility for Northern Affairs and Sask. Gaming while continuing to take the lead on the proposed new stadium project for Regina.

Bill Hutchinson moves from First Nations and Metis Relations to Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport, replacing Dustin Duncan who was promoted to the Environment file while also taking on responsibility for SaskEnergy and SaskWater.

Jeremy Harrison moves from Municipal Affairs to become Minister of Enterprise and Minister responsible for Trade.

Don Morgan and Rob Norris saw their portfolios juggled slightly.

Morgan continues as Minister of Justice and Attorney General while also taking on duties as Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety with responsibility over the Workers’ Compensation Board and the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.
