Toronto police said emergency crews were called to the area of Markham and Ellesmere roads at 3:22 p.m. on Monday for reports someone had been shot at Woburn Collegiate Institute.

Police said the school was placed into lockdown and added that the suspect, who was reportedly wearing a black jacket and a COVID mask, fled the area westbound.

Officers initially said a teenage boy was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries — he was pronounced dead at hospital. A second male teenager walked into hospital with a gunshot wound.

Police said it was not yet clear if either teenager attended the school.

Officers were at the scene checking on students after the shooting happened.

Woburn Junior Public School, which is near Woburn Collegiate, was also placed into lockdown, the Toronto District School Board said.

In a tweet just after 5:15 p.m., the board said the lockdowns had been lifted.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said he was “angry” to hear about the daytime shooting while class was in session.

“Any gun violence is unacceptable but it is even more frustrating to know someone would carry a gun, leave alone pull the trigger, anywhere near a school,” he said in a tweeted statement.
