Mother charged with killing daughters seeking bail

LAVAL – A 44-year-old woman charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of her two young daughters is seeking bail more than a year after her arrest.

A publication ban has been placed on evidence presented to Superior Court Justice Claude Champagne Wednesday morning.

Prosecutor Isabelle Briand confirmed that the Crown wants to keep Adele Sorella in custody based on all three of the criteria a judge can use in deciding to keep someone in custody before a trial; that the person poses a flight risk, they might reoffend or that releasing the person would cause an informed public to lose faith in the justice system.

The bodies of Sorella’s two daughters, Amanda De Vito, 9, and her 8-year-old sister Sabrina, were found in the family home in Laval on De L’Adjudant St. on March 31, 2009.

Among the witnesses who testified Wednesday morning are a Laval police detective, a relative of Sorella’s, a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

Sorella’s husband Giovanni De Vito remains a wanted man. He has been on the lam since police sought to arrest him on Nov. 22, 2006, in Project Colisee. He is wanted on drug trafficking charges. The bail hearing resumes Wednesday afternoon.
