Sheegl says he’s sworn to silence

WINNIPEG — The city manager at the heart of the fire-hall scandal says he’s unable to give his side of the story.

“Sorry, I am bound by the terms of a confidentiality agreement and therefore have no comment,” former chief administrative officer Phil Sheegl told Global News in an email.

He did not respond to a further request to clarify the agreement or to say whether he will retain his position on any of the five boards he currently sits on.

Sheegl is a board member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Winnipeg Convention Centre, Centre Venture Development Corporation, the Winnipeg Civic Employees’ Benefit Program and Habitat for Humanity.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Convention Centre were what the city refers to as “citizen appointments” and were not connected to his position as CAO.

At least one city councillor said Sheegl should be removed from those boards immediately.

“As a person who wants someone representing the city on the Blue Bombers, which is also going over, on the convention centre, which is a massive project, we should have a city representative, not a resigned representative,” said Coun. John Orlikow.

Mayor Sam Katz said those positions will be dealt with in the very near future.

Habitat for Humanity is a charity Sheegl contributes to in his personal time.

Habitat said the former CAO has given them excellent advice over the last five years.

His term ends next April and the charity has no plans to review his position prior to that date.
