A police officer has been taken to hospital after they were struck by a car in a Toronto parking lot.
In a tweet, Toronto police said the incident took place in a parking lot located in the Kennedy Road and Ellesmere Road area at around 6:14 p.m.
Police said the officer was in the parking lot when he was struck by a white four-door car that fled the area. A spokesperson told Global News the officer was on foot in the area.
Speaking at the scene, Acting Insp. Craig Young said plainclothes officers had arrested someone in the area. Meanwhile, other plainclothes police officers “not immediately involved in the arrest” were in a driveway.
Young said a vehicle “drove directly at the police officer, struck the officer and then fled the scene having struck two additional vehicles.”
Police recovered the car — a white Toyota — nearby, but the suspect fled on foot
“Early indicators are that (the incident) was deliberate,” Toronto police said.
The officer’s injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
“We are absolutely looking for any witnesses with eyewitness accounts, dashcam video, security video,” Young said.
