Hello!
These are still early days, but many of you are already asking questions about how I’m finding my new position on the anchor desk and whether this new experience at Global is much different from my last.
Firstly, it’s important to point out the local news market of Toronto is demanding and fiercely competitive. Consumers of local news can choose from a number of broadcasts, so how does the News Hour define itself differently?
In my view, the News Hour’s editorial core is made up of a handful of BIG brains. Every newscast combines the most notable stories of the day, with perspectives a viewer won’t find elsewhere. Fresh ideas and differing points of view receive respectful attention. Tough questions get asked and answered. It’s a heady, eye-opening experience to attend these meetings where the major editorial choices are made and the daily newscast takes shape. I’m very proud to be a part of that daily process.
I also want to write a few words about my remarkable co-anchor Leslie Roberts. Together we’re forging a new kind of on-air partnership, one we hope viewers of the show will enjoy. Leslie is a consummate professional. He has a wicked sense of humour. He’s also been kind, generous and understanding as I learn the ropes of this new undertaking.
Some of you are uncomfortable with the changes. Others are expressing nostalgia for my very able predecessor.
Change is hard. For everyone.
For those of you who are enjoying the new energy on the desk — thank you for the vote of confidence; for others, on the fence, I ask for a little more time and patience as Leslie and I find our way.
By the way, Global Toronto is entering an exciting phase of re-building after a period of financial instability. This fall, the “look” of the News Hour will undergo a dramatic update. I’m looking forward to keeping all of you in the loop.
