Denis Coderre weighs in on Montreal’s construction chaos

MONTREAL- Montrealers are going through some difficult driving times these days. Motorists can hardly turn a corner without running into a construction zone.

To make matters worse, many of the public work projects are being completed and then torn up again for additional work. The latest: Pine Avenue.

As Global News first reported last week, the street was dug up to repair a broken water main. After it was repaired and the street repaved the City learned of another leak and the street has to be dug up again.

Now one of the mayoral candidates is weighing in on this growing problem.

Denis Coderre promises if elected he’ll make sure there is better coordination between all the city’s agencies and partners to avoid repeating work on the same streets.

“Everybody will talk to each other and people will be responsible for their jobs. We call that accountability,” he said.

Pine Avenue isn’t the first road that had to be dug up twice for infrastructure work. Five years ago, the City was criticized for rebuilding St Laurent Boulevard and then digging it up again after the fact.

The same thing happened last year on Redpath Street and Rosemont Boulevard.

City Hall analyst Karim Boulos calls it a waste.

“We’re stealing tax payers money and throwing it out. That’s wrong, ” he said.
