Telus to move ahead with building a cell phone tower at Oak and 49th

Telus is deciding to move ahead with a cell phone tower in Vancouver despite repeated protests from the neighbourhood involved.

The latest protest occurred in June, with people living around Oak and 49th trying to stop workers from moving sections of the tower into place.

They are worried about possible side effects from radiation.

They also say Telus doesn’t seem to care about their concerns.

Today, a handful of residents gathered where the tower is going up, preventing Telus from beginning work on the structure.

Residents say they got notification last week that the company was going ahead with the tower.

The company says it cannot find a good alternate location for the cell tower, and that it’s needed to boost reception in the area, particularly for 9-1-1 calls.
