TORONTO – A young Ottawa mother has died during her honeymoon, when a balcony at the Mexico resort collapsed underneath her and two other Canadians.

Shannon Amy Guy’s husband, Paul, was reportedly taking photos of her and another couple when the balcony of the suite they were standing on collapsed, Paul’s mother Darlene told CBC News.

Darlene Guy told CBC the couple had been living together for years and have two daughters: seven months and three years old. Sources told the Ottawa Citizen the couple had married Aug. 2.

A spokesperson for Foreign Affairs said Canadian consular officials are in contact with Mexican authorities to gather more information and are providing consular assistance to those affected.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian who passed away and the 2 other Canadians who were injured,” said the statement.

A Tuesday post on Shannon’s Facebook page showed she was at Toronto’s Pearson Airport “feeling excited” for the trip.

Paul’s Wednesday status confirmed they had landed at the resort. He wrote, “All is good we are settled at the resort. Phone is not working right we will figure it out in the morning and text when we figure it out.”

Shannon studied at Algonquin College in Ottawa, and had attended Carleton Place High School, according to her profile. Family members and friends posted photos of Shannon on Thursday, and received many comments of support and condolences for their loss.

The Citizen reported family members were flying to Mexico Friday morning.
