GALLERY: Banff on alert after grizzly sightings

BANFF- The sighting of three young grizzly cubs near the Banff townsite has wildlife officials on alert.

The trio was spotted over the weekend chewing grass in the townsite, but what’s even more concerning is that their mom is none other than Bear 64.

Parks staff have long been keeping tabs on her, and are worried that she’s not with her two- year-old cubs.

“These cubs are separated from their mom earlier than normal, we don’t know why,” says Michelle Macullo from Parks Canada. “It could be a temporary separation, she may not be with us any more or she may have decided it was time for them to leave.

“It’s a very vulnerable time for these bears,” she continues. “They went from having this great family structure with mom who protected them, to now, meaning their place has changed on the totem pole which makes them fore susceptible to bigger bears and things like that.”

The cubs were outfitted with collars, so anyone who spots them is asked to call the wardens office.
