TORONTO – A man and a woman are in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a fire inside a rooming house in downtown Toronto Tuesday morning.
Officials say a call came in at 7:47 a.m. about a 2-alarm fire at a residence near the intersection of Dundas Street and Gladstone Avenue.
Toronto Fire say crews arrived and pulled two adults from the fire, the woman was taken down a ladder and the man was carried down through the interior of the house.
Toronto EMS say they performed CPR on the woman in her 40s who was then transported to hospital with second degree burns. Her injuries are considered life-threatening.
A man was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“It appears that the fire originated in the kitchen on the main floor and worked its way up to the second floor and trapped people on the third floor,” said Toronto Fire Captain Mike Strapko.
In total, 12 trucks and 45 firefighters were called to deal with the fire which was extinguished just after 8 a.m.
The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
