Concerned parents gather to protest cuts to South Delta Health Unit

A group of concerned parents gathered outside the South Delta Health Unit this morning to protest some upcoming cuts.

The Fraser Health Authority is eliminating six part-time nursing positions from the facility.

The community is concerned about how that’s going to affect the level of health care they receive.

Fraser Health has not revealed what  health services will be affected by the change, but the B.C. Nurses Union has been told six out of the 19 nursing positions will be eliminated.

“It is a significant drop in nurses and we as the nurses union is really concerned about the care level and the impact it will have on the patients,” says Cheryl Appleton of the BC Nurses’ Union.

No one from the Fraser Health Authority was available to go on camera today, but a spokesperson offered the following written statement:

“The South Delta Public Health Unit is not closing. The public will continue to have access to the same services as they do now – The changes to the staffing model are being discussed at this time with the unions. As soon as we have the details, we will share them with the community.”

The changes to the public health unit are scheduled to happen before the end of the year.
