EDMONTON- Fire crews were kept busy Sunday afternoon, after an abandoned house caught fire in northeast Edmonton.

“It was probably a farm house, there’s other sheds, looks like an old chicken house too,” said District Chief Greg Flett with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

Firefighters were called to the area of 153rd Avenue and Fort Road around 3:30 p.m. When crews arrived, the walls of the house had already caved in.

Officials believe the abandoned building may have been frequented by the homeless.

“There are people looking for warmth, for shelter this time of year,” Flett said. “There’s lots of garbage, there’s lots of materials surrounding the house that shows it could have been a homeless place, where people are living or party. There’s tracks in there where vehicles went in and out frequently.”

The blaze caused some troubles for firefighters because there was no water supply in the area.

“Because of the water supply, not having a hydrant, we had to bring in extra tankers to shuttle water,” Flett explained.

The Edmonton Police Service closed Fort Road between 153rd and 155th Avenues Sunday night, while fire crews worked to determine the cause.
